Workshop Summary Kasparov vs. Big Blue: the Signiicance for Artiicial Intelligence

Participants discussed the signii-cance and ramiications of the recent chess matches for the science of artiicial intelligence. On the one hand, the workshop fostered a serious discussion of the issues related to the nature and possibility of intelligence, using Kasparov vs. Deep Blue as the context for this discussion. On the other hand, the workshop was intended to be an opportunity for the computational science community to review and reeect upon the extensive AI research, both past and present, undertaken in order to solve the chess problem. Each of the presentations addressed one or more of the following questions: Are there thinking machines? Is Deep Blue one of them? What are the suucient/necessary conditions for "sensing" in-telligence? What does Kasparov vs. Deep Blue mean to AI? Is Deep Blue "AI"? What are the important milestones in the development of chess-playing programs? What software technology underlies the best chess playing pro-grams? What is the future of this technology?
